If you or someone you know is being abused or neglected, help is available. Whoever you are—a concerned bystander, an overwhelmed caregiver, or a person experiencing abuse—you can take the first step now to get the support you need.

If you make a phone call and the line is no longer in service, or if you reach someone who isn’t helpful, don’t give up. Try again. Try another number. Look for someone else to talk to.

You can choose what kind of support feels right and what to do next. If you want information but are not ready to take action, you can choose not to give your name.

Winnipeg Police

The police should be contacted if you suspect that there is immediate or impending harm to an older person. Ask to speak to someone who has been trained in senior abuse, or domestic/family violence.

Seniors' Abuse Support Line

Call the Seniors Abuse Support Line and speak to a trained and caring counsellor. To learn more about seniors abuse and about staying safe, remember that help is just a phone call away. You can call the Seniors Abuse Support Line even when you are not sure that what you are experiencing is abuse. All calls are free & confidential. Calls placed outside of working hours will be returned the next business day.

A & O: Support Services for Older Adults

Confidential consultation, assessment and counselling services are provided to seniors who are victims of abuse.

A & O's Safe Suite Program: Crisis accommodations are available for men, women and couples 55+ who are in need of a safe place to stay due to abuse or neglect. Assistance in arranging finances, housing and legal services can also be provided.

Protection for Persons in Care Office

This Office is responsible for receiving and investigating reports of alleged abuse or neglect while receiving care in personal care homes, hospitals or any other designated health facility. If a person’s life or well-being is in immediate danger, take steps to ensure the person’s safety first, then call the PPCP’s confidential, toll-free line.

Geriatric Mental Health Team

Geriatric Mental Health Team members provide assessment and short-term intervention to persons over the age of 65 years who are experiencing mental health problems. The Team may provide consultation, supportive counseling for the person and/or family and monitor the impact of recommended interventions.
Referrals to the Geriatric Program Assessment Team (GPAT) and Geriatric Mental Health Team (GMHT) can be made by a physician, a health care professional, family member or by the person.
